Farnworth and Worsley Methodist Circuit

Cleggs Lane Methodist Church

This Church sprung from the Walkden Wesleyan church leaders' concern for the introduction of Methodism into the locality of Little Hulton known as Streetgate.

Their vision and a simple trust in God led to the starting of a Sunday school and mission above a room in Manchester Rd West.

In due course the young Church constructed a building in Cleggs Lane which originally served as a Sunday School and Chapel and this opened in 1878. The original pitch pine seating accommodates 180 persons and we have the distinction of singing with the only pipe organ in the Worsley circuit!

During the 50 years subsequent to 1878 the building was extended by the Construction of a Sunday School Hall with classrooms. In the post-war years , no fewer than eight local preachers were members of this Church, of which two became Methodist ministers.

Today Revd Philip Brooks and Pat Culpan have pastoral responsibility for 27 members and a further number of adherents. Whilst the congregation is mainly elderly, averaging 20 at services, their faithfulness and support is praiseworthy.Quality meals and refreshments are regular features at Church anniversaries, frequent fund raising events and bi-annual brass band concerts.

The School Hall is used twice weekly by a local Karate Club, and weekly by the Walkden & Worsley Deaf club and also once a week by a Tai Chi club. But is not in use for other regular events at the present time and is available during the day, the above clubs using the premises in the evenings.

Worshippers and visitors are assured of a warm welcome.
