The church serves the community in Farnworth and is centrally placed on the main shopping street. The membership of some 130 supports many and varied weekday activities:
A very active Dramatic Society - producing 2 plays and a pantomime each year; a Playgroup each morning and afternoon; Age Concern Lunch and Leisure club; fellowship meetings; Thursday and Saturday Coffee Mornings; Scouts; two thriving Funzone Clubs (8-11s and 12+).
The present church was started in 1972, although it took 6 years to complete, and is shared by three denominations.
In the 1960's approaches were made to the churches in Farnworth - Farnworth Congregational, Ellesmere Street Independent Methodist, Queen Street Methodist Church and Farnworth Wesley Methodists - with the idea of building a new shared church. But it wasn't until 1972 that the plans became possible when the Congregational Church, which occupied the present site, voted and eventually agreed. Cawdor Street Methodist closed at this time and a few joined the new church but unfortunately did not amalgamate as had been hoped. It proved impossible too for Ellesmere Street to be part of the new church since they were not part of the Act of Parliament which made the Sharing Agreement possible.
Market Street Congregational Church ~ There has been a church on the site since a few non-conformists decided to build a chapel early in 1808. It was enlarged in 1837 because of increasing numbers and the Farnworth Congregational Church was opened for worship in 1850. The Memorial Hall was added in 1862 - this is the Gothic design building to the rear of the present church (pictured).
Farnworth Wesley Methodists ~ started in a cottage, transferred to the Hollands School building as their numbers increased. A chapel on Market Street was built in 1930, enlarged in 1844, and moved to the junction of Preston Street and Church Street in 1861.
Queen Street Methodist Church ~ until 1932 when the Union of the Methodist Churches took place was known as the Primitive Methodist Church. The cause of Primitive Methodism was brought to Farnworth by a few devout men from Walkden and meetings were held in the open air, then in a cottage on Albert Road and in 1840 a chapel was built, replaced by a larger building in 1861.
Ellesmere Street Independent Methodists ~ Again started in a cottage in Peel Street, three men being responsible for establishing Independent Methodism in Farnworth, and moving to a larger home in Bridgewater Street as the congregation grew, then transferring to 'an upper room over a joiner's shop' in Ellesmere Street in 1865 before building a new chapel in 1869.
The life of all these churches which once served Farnworth goes on in the present church of Trinity...we build on their foundations.
You are assured of a warm welcome at Trinity - SUNDAY WORSHIP 10.30am and 6.15pm
